This projects takes place in the home for the mentally disabled children and adults in Cusco. Currently, there are 68 patients (children and adults) living in this home and they are taken care by 10 staff members and local volunteers. The home grows its own vegetables, tubers and herbs (lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, onions, radish, potatoes…. etc.).  All the vegetables are used to feed the patients and staff working at this organization. The patients are provided with three meals per day.

biohuerto photoThe organization has one person tending the bio garden. This volunteering opportunity will challenge your muscles and break a sweat!!!!! Your help is needed to clean the land, plant new trees, water the plants and everything related to maintaining the crops and ensuring the land continues to produce.  The person will be working closely to the person tending the bio- garden and no previous experience is needed.

The volunteer will work from 8:30am- 11:30am M-T-W-F (not on Thursday). There are some exceptions when the volunteer is needed on a Thursday or Saturday (this will be agreed in advance.).

The Spanish classes take place in the afternoons, from M- F, 1.5 hours per day[2]. The class schedule will be arranged between the student and teacher. The rest of the time is for you to explore the city, meet other volunteers, learn about your host community culture and social practices. Of course continue practicing your Spanish.

Our goal is to help you find a balance between the hard work, study and free time as well as provide you with opportunities to explore and learn about the culture and history of Peru. With this in mind, this project includes a one-day visit to the archeological site of Machu Picchu (round transportation Cusco-Ollantaytambo-Cusco, train tickets, bus tickets, entrance to Machu Picchu ticket and guide). Everything will be arranged for you; you just have to show up at the pick-up point at a date and time that will be communicated to you in advance.
